Confident remedy for Tsunami and Floods

      







Deep dug wells and tunnels: Covered till required

In order to fight back Tsunami, very deep dug wells should be kept completely covered. The system should be such that at the time of tsunami the wells should open up automatically. This can help Japan and other countries fight tsunami.

Long tunnels extending to several miles can be constructed to collect water during Tsunami and / or floods.

The collection of water can be done by having a mesh below the surface of land.

Pipes that supply water to houses form a network in every city. Similar pipes will be created but not for the supply of water but for the transfer of water from the roads to the building where water can be stored. These pipes will absorb water on the streets by the usage of electricity or other efficient systems. The water that will be absorbed will be transferred to the flood water storage buildings. These buildings will be built especially for transfer to or storage of flood water. This will enable the transfer of water from streets to water storage buildings. This will prevent the side effects of floods and reservoir.

I think making of wells near to the house has been stopped since past several years. This can be the reason of greater problem with floods. Deep wells created in every house at ground level can help fight floods. Also, this can be of some benefit in fighting tsunami. I also believe that the heat transfer takes place by making of the wells. This heat or energy transfer can impart good health to the ground and may become the cause of lesser earthquakes.

Re-enter the tsunami water in the sea

For this purpose a connection between the land and the sea will be made. The connection will be under the ground. The water which enters the land will enter the sea again and this cycle will continue.

For example, when tsunami water enters the land at Point A; in the Point A there will be an established link with the sea water under the ground. The water with the help of tunnel will again enter the sea several miles away. This cycle will continue. The water will enter the land and will be thrown back in the sea through the underground system. It will be an automatic system and will require no external action to achieve it. This can be the best possible remedy for ANY amount of water thrown on land. Send it back to sea!!!

  1. Gary E. Freeman • The storage of water is a great idea. The problem is that solutions like you are suggesting work for small floods but the volumes required for large floods and tsunamis is too large for this type of storage to have an impact. Local storage solutions were reviewed in the 1990's after the 1993 Mississippi River flood and results showed that for small floods - maybe up to the 10 year return interval flood - local storage such as that you suggest (and wetlands) help. For larger floods the volumes are so large that the local storage is overwhelmed and ineffective. The reduction of peaks goes from something around 10% to less than 1% as the floods get larger (as I recall). It's matter of relative volumes. The larger floods have huge volumes that can't be stored efficiently unless you have very large volume reservoirs.

    Thank you Gary for the informative feedback. I appreciate your response! I was thinking of a big building for the storage of water. I meant the building like the past World Trade Center of USA. The buildings that size which will be built with the only intention of storage of water. Also, the capture of flood water will be through the automatic systems which will form a network in the whole of the place with houses and roads.   3. anand verdhen • Dear Ekta .. Lifting water from street to roof top (if storage area is available with safety measure) is ok. But the quality of water shall be not usable for the drinking and cooking purposes due to impurities. Secondly, Flood water volume is not such that you can store on roof top or small tank or reservoir. The volume depends on the catchment, rainfall intensity and drainage condition. So, thinking to reduce the affect of flood or even attenuate the flood peak is out of question by this small amount of water lifting activities.

  4. Sun-Fatt Chong • As a rough estimation, flood volume of large tsunamis brought to land could amount to several hundred millions meter cube of water. So you probably need to build 10,000 World Trade Centrs to store the flood water. It is normally not economically feasible to preserve such huge storage for a rare event such as tsunami.

    Pedro M. Pinto dos Santos • I don't have experience in flood defences, and I usually don't support large structural measures to address flooding issues. The discussion is interesting and I would say that instead of storing, perhaps we can think of ways to circulate such amounts of water out of vulnerable areas.

  5. Ekta initiated a great idea, this is the time to think about it.
    I don't thing we can "Defense" or "Protect" the Natural Disasters, only we can do "Control" and/or "Management". I agree with Mr.Freeman that "Volume & velocity" of "Sea surge", extreme case is "tsunami" - storage/recirculate of such volume of water by any man-made effort will not be economically feasible.

    An idea of "Management" or "Control" will be more viable option.
    To calculate Return period of tsunami - we will have to use different "approach" than conventional "Return Period" calculation in general - due to insufficient "occurrence/events".

  6. I agree Kamal that it is an expensive thing to do. But recollect when trains were invented - the same thoughts might have come in the mind of people. Railways tracks that run throughout the country…very expensive. Were airplanes any cheaper? If we want to create something as a protective measure...we will have to create something new and it will be expensive. The only thing important is that it should be very much beneficial for mankind.

    I like your interest in water and hydrology. Do'nt mind even if the question is small and silly. your interest and true involvement shall make you knowledgable. The work on flood fear and friend like psychology is need to be explored further.

    Dear Anand, Thank you for your response on my post. Do you mean there is fear in the mind of people with regards to the possibility of floods? I would like to categorize it into two types: 1. Fear of Loss 2. Fear of Death. I believe that people far from spirituality have more fear of loss and death as compared to those who believe in God. I am not recommending here a particular religious practice. I believe that spirituality does help fight fear. The best way to do this is to prepare people for adversities in life. These adverse circumstances might not be always as a result of floods but can be due to several other reasons. Someone who fears floods might also fear failure in a job interview. Anxiety, fear and depression are mainly due to lack of development at emotional and mental level. Unfortunately no training is given for this in any school. Fear of death takes a long time of understanding and emotional efforts for overcoming it. I think it is more important to understand emotions than know plants that can help change it (...referring to medicines here).
    I also want to add that a good government system which is very supportive can help fight fear of loss to a significant level. At least you are sure in this case that you won't die of hunger or lack of medical aid or can buy later your most precious dreams. Hope heals wounds faster.

  8. I have reasons to believe that people in the olden times had their houses constructed in such a fashion that they were "Flood Resistant Homes" (FRH). Rich people can still opt for it if we have an architectural plan in mind. May be the flooring was high or there were wells around every house. If every house has one room for storing flood water then it can help. All you have to do is to give a space of 20% of your house area to flood water. We can also create and sell special areas that have several FRH. I sometimes feel that current floods and earthquakes are challenging our present architectural system. We need innovation here just as we did in the past to fight rain and other smaller environmental adversities.

  9. I have a plan in mind. We can create an area that is 1. Floods resistant 2. Earthquake resistant 3. Tsunami resistant.
    In this area the houses will be actually tall buildings. The first three floors will be left as empty. People will start living from the fourth floor. The availability of food will be in the central location of the area. The fourth floor of the building supplying food will be connected to all the other buildings at the fourth floor level.
